Legend says, thousands of years ago Yokai (supernatural beings and mysterious phenomena in Japanese folklore) invaded the street for a “Night Parade of 100 Demons,” after the local residents cleaned out their shops and homes, removing unwanted items such as tools and utensils which then became Tsukumo-gami (tools that have acquired a spirit after being used for a long time). A parade and festival was then named after this event which takes place every year. The adorable handmade Yokai can be seen all year round in front of shops and restaurants on the street. Some take on the form of traditional Yokai, while others have gotten more creative, making Yokai to match the theme of their shop. Some of the restaurants even have yokai-themed food.
