This event is held at the historic Hotel Gajoen in Meguro, Tokyo, which was built back in 1931 at a time when Tokyo was still recovering from the the Great Kantō earthquake and vying against Shanghai for the title of "Paris of the East". This extravagant venue is a display of pure opulence, and was regarded as a fairytale kingdom by its visitors which earned it the nickname, Palace of the Dragon God.
Although the majority of the old hotel was taken down, moved, and reformed in 1988 due to the construction of Meguro river, original parts of the hand-carved and hand-painted wall art has been relocated to different areas of the hotel. There are also 6 banquet halls and one staircase from the old Gajoen that still remain, which are only accessible to the public during guided tours, or when exhibits such as the Wa no Akari are held. This exhibit is a wonderful way to experience the ornate art and architecture as its contrasted with installations of lights and trademark Japanese objects.
