Traditionally, Daruma are purchased in the beginning of the new year, and one of the eyes is then filled in while making a wish. Once the wish is comes true you fill in the other eye which represents restoring eyesight of the deity and expressing your appreciation for granting your wish. If your wish does not come true, you can still fill in the eye in recognition of a successful year.
At the Kamimizo (Mizono) Daruma Market you can bring your old Daruma to be burned, and purchase your new one for the year. The Daruma are burned during a ceremony at the festival in order to free the deity after it has fulfilled its purpose for the year.
