Daruma (達磨) are traditional Japanese dolls that are regarded as a talisman of good luck. Daruma are typically purchased at the beginning of the new year, and the eyes are left blank so that the person who purchases it can draw in one of the eyes while making a wish or a promise to fulfill a goal for the year. Once the wish or goal has been achieved, the owner of the daruma fills in the other eye, and brings it to the temple where they purchased it to be burned.
The Takahata Fudosan Daruma Market has vendors from 150 shops around the Kanto area that sell both traditional and modern types of daruma.
