Shorinzan Darumaji Temple - The Origin of Daruma Dolls 少林山達磨寺

Updated: Apr 15

Shorinzan Darumaji Temple

This temple was built in 1697, and is dedicated to the Daruma doll, which is a round hand-painted doll that symbolizes good luck. They start out with white circles for eyes and when purchased, and the owner draws in a black circle in one of the eyes while making a wish. Once the wish comes true you fill in the other eye and then at the end of the year you bring it back to burn it! There are many Daruma dolls stacked upon each other at the shrine, as well as all around the grounds.
