Shojin Ryori (精進料理) Plant Based Buddhist Cuisine at Mt.Takao

Updated: Apr 15

** Unfortunately this location is no longer accepting reservations for parties under 10 people. They said that they may change this in the future so we will update this when we know more **

Shojin ryori (精進料理) is a type of traditional Buddhist cuisine that is plant based, and served at both temples and traditional shojin ryori restaurants. It usually has multiple courses of dishes with mild flavors that are prepared with local and seasonal vegetables.

Mount Takao is just a 50 minute train ride from Shinjuku station. At Mount Takao you can hike the whole way up, or take the ropeway or cable car part way up and take a short hike to the very top where you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day! Mount Takao also has some restaurants, snack stands, and many temples and shrines to visit. At one of the temples they serve Shojin Ryori to the public. You can either drop in and have their simple shojin ryori meal (which they only have a limited supply of per day), or you can call in and make a reservation for a special shojin ryori meal in a private or semi-private room (which is what is shown in these photos).

**Please note that you may not get exactly what is in the photos, the dishes are slightly different for each season. This was in the fall**
