Momotaro Shrine 桃太郎神社 - A Shrine Full of Japanese Folklore Statues!

Updated: Apr 15

Momotaro 桃太郎 "peach boy" in English, is a well-known hero in Japanese folklore. In the story a childless elderly woman finds a giant peach floating in the river while washing her clothes and brings it back to show her husband. When they try to open the peach to eat it, they find a young boy inside of it who tells them that the Gods have chosen them to be his parents. When the young boy reaches adolescence, he leaves his parents to fight oni (ogres, demons). On his journey defeating oni the boy meets various characters that help him along the way, and the story is meant to teach values such as wisdom, loyalty, and courage to young children. At this shrine you will find statues of the characters from this tale.
