Awa-Odori is a traditional dance originating from Tokushima prefecture that has a history of over 400 years. This festival is held from August 12th to 15th as a part of the "Obon" festival which is a Japanese Buddhist custom where families return to the grave sites of their loved ones and attend festivals with traditional rituals and dances to honor their ancestors. The belief is that the spirits of the loved ones who passed away come back during this time to visit.
The Koenji Awa-Odori is one of the largest festivals of it's kind that brings in many attendees every year. Over 10,000 dancers participate and once the sun starts to go down they start from either JR Koenji Station or Shin-Koenji Station and make their way around the area, even through the small shopping center streets. There are also tons of food stalls, performers, and games.
