Updated: Apr 15

Tsumugi (紬) is a traditional type of cloth woven with thread made from scraps of silk that are knotted together by hand. At Tsumugi No Yakata you can learn the history of the production of this thread from the very beginning in the exhibition hall and museum areas, and even get a hands-on experience weaving it yourself in their workshop. The grounds of Tsumugi No Yakata consists of 9 separate buildings which include an exhibition hall, museum, shop, cafe, and a workshop space.

(You cannot enter some of the buildings, but you can admire them from outside).

Where: つむぎの館 12-2 Yuki, Ibaraki 307-0001

How much: 2200 JPY

(There is also a silk dyeing workshop available. Please see their website for details)

The exhibition hall is inside of a 150-year-old folk house that was relocated and utilizes Japanese traditions and techniques to create a relaxing space. You can even touch some of the cloths to get a feeling of the kind of texture that it produces,
